Customers researching smart home automation in the UK usually shortlist Loxone, Control4, Crestron and Savant. This guide is a head-to-head comparison of Loxone vs Control4 — the two systems that overlap most for typical UK residential installs.

1. Architecture and philosophy
Loxone is a single-vendor ecosystem. One Miniserver (the central controller) runs everything in the house: lighting, heating, audio, security, blinds, energy. The hardware is all Loxone-branded, all designed to work together, all configured in the same software (Loxone Config). The Miniserver lives on a DIN rail in your distribution board and operates entirely locally — no cloud round-trip for any function.
Control4 is an integration platform. The Director controller doesn’t replace your lighting, your speakers or your AV gear — it ties together third-party hardware from Lutron (lighting), Sonos (audio), Sony / Yamaha (AV) and dozens of other brands. The strength is choice; the weakness is complexity and cost.
For most UK residential customers, the single-vendor approach is simpler, cheaper and easier to support. For customers with strong existing preferences for a specific lighting brand or AV ecosystem, Control4 can be the right tool.
2. Cost — the headline difference
A typical 3–4 bed UK retrofit with full automation (lighting, heating, multiroom audio, security, blinds, energy):
- Loxone: £15,000–£25,000 ex-VAT for a full install, fixed quote, no recurring fees.
- Control4: £25,000–£60,000+ ex-VAT, depending on which third-party components are chosen. Lutron lighting alone adds £8,000–£15,000 versus Loxone-native lighting in equivalent specification.
For a luxury install with Crestron-grade AV, premium Lutron lighting and bespoke programming, Control4 can run into six figures. Loxone tops out closer to £50,000 even for very large detached properties — because the hardware costs less and the install is more standardised.
3. Subscriptions and recurring costs
Loxone: Zero subscription. Optional Westgate Care plan from £180/year if you want priority support. Software updates are free for life.
Control4: Most dealers operate an annual service contract for software updates and remote support — typically £200–£500/year. Some features (4Sight remote access, for example) historically required a paid subscription. Adding or moving major components often involves a paid dealer visit.
Over a 10-year ownership window, the recurring-cost difference between Loxone and Control4 is typically £2,000–£5,000 in Control4’s disfavour.
4. Cloud dependency and local operation
Loxone runs entirely locally. The Miniserver is a small Linux device sitting in your house; it makes every decision in real time without contacting any cloud. Your lights, heating, audio, blinds and security all work with no internet at all. The only thing that needs connectivity is remote app access from outside the house.
Control4 also has a local Director controller, but several features (mobile app access, voice control integrations, some third-party device support) lean more heavily on cloud connectivity. Most installs work without internet for core lighting and AV, but the experience degrades faster than with Loxone.
For rural UK customers (Derbyshire Dales, Lincolnshire fens, anywhere with unreliable broadband), Loxone’s pure-local architecture is a meaningful advantage.
5. Programming and dealer lock-in
Loxone Config is the configuration software for every Loxone install in Europe. It’s free, runs on Windows, and any Loxone Partner can open your project file and take over your system without reprogramming from scratch. If you move, your new local Loxone Partner can be on-site within days.
Control4 Composer Pro is dealer-only software. You don’t have access to your own system’s configuration. If your dealer goes out of business, retires, or you fall out with them, you need another Control4 dealer to take over — and in practice this often involves significant reprogramming time billed at dealer rates.
The lock-in difference is one of the most important practical considerations and is rarely surfaced in sales conversations.
6. Where Control4 genuinely wins
To be fair to Control4, there are scenarios where it’s the right choice:
- High-end AV integration. If your install centres on a £40,000 cinema room with Kaleidescape, Crestron-grade matrix switching and bespoke surround calibration, Control4’s AV ecosystem is more mature than Loxone’s.
- Existing premium lighting investment. If you already have Lutron HomeWorks or RadioRA installed and you don’t want to rip it out, Control4 ties into it natively. Loxone can integrate Lutron, but it’s not its strongest suit.
- Custom programming budget. Customers willing to pay £20,000+ for bespoke programming will get something more visually polished from a top Control4 dealer than from a standard Loxone install.
For everything else — which is 90% of UK residential — Loxone is the better answer.
7. Which should you choose?
Choose Loxone if you want:
- A single coherent system with one app, one Miniserver and no subscriptions.
- Fixed-quote pricing with no surprise dealer fees.
- Full functionality during broadband outages.
- The freedom to move and take any Loxone Partner with you.
- Strong energy management (solar self-consumption, EV scheduling, heating zoning).
Choose Control4 if you have:
- A luxury budget (£40k+ minimum) with a strong AV centrepiece.
- A specific commitment to Lutron, Crestron-equivalent AV or other premium third-party kit.
- An existing trusted Control4 dealer relationship you intend to maintain long-term.
