This is the comparison we’re asked about most often, usually phrased as “is it really worth twenty grand when a Nest is two hundred quid?”
It’s a fair question and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.
They’re not competing products
A Nest thermostat and a professionally installed automation system are as different as a microwave and a fitted kitchen. Both heat food. That’s roughly the extent of the overlap.
Hive and Nest give you remote control of one thing. The heating, from your phone, as one zone. They do it well, they cost a couple of hundred pounds, and for a great many households that is genuinely all that’s needed.
A professional system gives you a house that operates itself. Each room at its own temperature on its own schedule, lighting responding to daylight and occupancy, blinds closing before a room overheats, solar going into the hot water rather than the grid.
The mistake isn’t choosing either. It’s buying one while expecting the other.

Buy consumer kit if
We say this to people regularly, and we mean it:
- You want app control of your heating and nothing more
- Your budget is under a few thousand pounds
- You’re renting, or moving within a few years
- You have a small property where zoning would achieve little
- You want it working this weekend
In all of those cases a Nest or a Hive is the correct purchase and we’d be doing you a disservice to suggest otherwise.
The ten-year sum nobody does
One thing worth calculating before you decide the cheap option is cheap.
The thermostats themselves usually have no subscription. The cameras and doorbells in the same ecosystems generally do — typically £5–£15 per device per month for cloud recording. Four cameras and a doorbell at £8 each is £480 a year, or £4,800 over a decade, and the footage disappears the moment you stop paying.
Add replacement cycles. Consumer devices are typically replaced every five to ten years, either because they fail or because the manufacturer ends support — which has happened repeatedly across the industry, including to products people had paid for.
None of that makes consumer kit a bad buy. It just means the headline price isn’t the price.
The single biggest functional gap
If you take one thing from this: one thermostat cannot zone a house.
A Nest in the hallway measures the hallway — typically the coldest, draughtiest part of the building — and then heats every room to whatever that reading demands. The south-facing lounge that’s already warm. The spare bedroom nobody has entered since March. The bathroom you actually wanted warm at 7am.
Per-room control is where the saving in a professional system comes from, because the largest source of waste is heating rooms nobody is in. That’s a wiring change, not a software feature, which is why no consumer thermostat can deliver it however clever it gets.
If you’re renovating, read this bit
Whatever you decide about the system, run the cable.
If you’re having work done, cable at first fix costs very little and commits you to nothing. Fit a Nest today if that’s what suits you now — but with the cable in place, upgrading in five years costs a fraction of what it otherwise would.
Money spent on consumer devices isn’t a deposit against a professional system; the hardware doesn’t carry over. Cable does. It’s the only part of this decision that’s genuinely hard to reverse.
