Most domestic CCTV fails at the moment it matters. Positioned to identify, not to cover

That means cameras at face height where somebody would actually enter, rather than high on a gable end looking down at the tops of heads.

It means checking night performance on site rather than trusting the datasheet, because infrared range claims are measured in conditions your driveway will never reproduce. And it means fewer cameras, in better places.

03 · Integration

Cameras that stop being a separate system

A camera feed appears on the nearest wall panel when the doorbell rings. Exterior lighting comes up when motion is detected at the gate, rather than after someone is already at the door. Recording escalates when the alarm arms.

That coordination is the difference between an integrated system and four products sharing a wall.

What CCTV does not do

It does not prevent burglary on its own, and the deterrent effect is smaller than most people assume. Its real value is evidential and reassurance.

It works best alongside access control and alarm integration rather than as a standalone purchase. Where a camera overlooks a neighbour's property or public land there are GDPR obligations, and we will advise you on them at survey.

CCTV Installation — common questions

How much does CCTV installation cost?

A four-camera system with a network video recorder, local storage and professional siting starts around £1,400 ex-VAT. Larger properties, longer cable runs and higher-resolution cameras scale from there. There is no ongoing charge, because recording is local rather than cloud-based.

Do I need a subscription for CCTV?

Not with local recording, which is how we install. Footage is stored on a recorder in your property. Consumer camera brands typically charge £5–£15 per camera per month for cloud storage — on a four-camera house that is £240–£720 a year, indefinitely, and the footage disappears if you stop paying.

How many cameras do I need?

Fewer than most people expect, if they are sited properly. Approach paths, entry doors and any blind side of the property are worth covering. Wide shots of an entire garden look reassuring but rarely produce usable identification. Most domestic properties are well served by three to six cameras.

Can I view the cameras when I'm away?

Yes, remote viewing is available and secured properly rather than exposed to the open internet. The difference from cloud systems is that it is optional — the cameras keep recording locally whether or not you ever look at them remotely, and there is no third party holding your footage.

Is there anything I need to know about the law?

If a domestic camera captures anything beyond your own boundary — a pavement, a shared drive, a neighbour's garden — you take on data protection responsibilities under UK GDPR. In practice this means positioning cameras to minimise what they capture, putting up signage, and being able to respond if someone requests footage of themselves. We advise on positioning at survey; for anything unusual we would suggest checking the ICO's domestic CCTV guidance.

Will CCTV stop a burglary?

Honestly, not on its own, and the deterrent effect is smaller than most sales pitches suggest. Its value is evidential — identifying who was there and when — and reassurance. It works considerably better as part of a system that also includes proper access control, alarm integration and lighting that responds to motion.

Can you integrate cameras I already own?

If they are ONVIF-compatible IP cameras, usually yes. Cheaper consumer cameras that only communicate with their own manufacturer's cloud generally cannot be integrated into a local recording system. We check what you have at survey and tell you which units are worth keeping.
