Most gardens are lit by one floodlight over the back door on a PIR, which produces a flat wash of white light, deep shadows everywhere else, and a sudden glare that ruins the view from inside. It is security lighting doing an amenity job badly. Good garden lighting works the opposite way — low levels, warm colour, and light placed deliberately rather than blasted from a single point.

01 · Design

Layers outdoors, same as indoors

Something low along the paths so people can move safely. Uplighting on a few trees or a wall so the garden has depth rather than a black void beyond the patio. Something soft on the seating area.

Nothing bright enough to stop you seeing the rest of it. In practice a well-lit garden uses less total light than the floodlight it replaces.

Outdoors is where bad installs show up first

IP-rated fittings, correct cable and containment, RCD protection and proper terminations are what separate an installation still working in year eight from one that fills with water in the first winter.

All exterior electrical work is carried out by our own qualified engineers and notified under Part P where required.

Garden & Outdoor Lighting — common questions

How much does garden lighting installation cost?

A designed scheme for a typical domestic garden — path lighting, a few uplights and an automated seating area — starts around £2,100 ex-VAT. Larger gardens, longer cable runs and feature lighting to mature trees or extensive boundaries scale from there. The design work is included rather than charged separately.

Is garden lighting the same as security lighting?

They are different jobs and they conflict. Security lighting is bright, white and motion-triggered; amenity lighting is low, warm and continuous through the evening. A single floodlight trying to do both produces glare that actually makes it harder to see the garden. We design them as separate layers on the same system.

Will it use a lot of electricity?

Less than people expect, and usually less than the floodlight it replaces. A layered LED scheme running at low output through the evening draws very little, and automating it to fade out at bedtime removes the main source of waste, which is lighting left on all night because nobody went out to switch it off.

Can garden lighting be added to an existing garden?

Yes, and most of our work is retrofit. Cable is routed in trenching or existing containment, and modern low-voltage systems keep the disruption modest. The work is more involved once mature planting and hard landscaping are in place, so we survey the routes and price them properly rather than assuming.

What happens to outdoor fittings in winter?

Correctly specified ones are fine. The failures we get called to are almost always under-rated fittings, poor terminations or cable that was never suitable for burial. We specify IP ratings for the actual exposure of each position and terminate to standard, which is unglamorous but it is the reason a scheme still works in year eight.

Does exterior electrical work need certification?

Yes. Fixed exterior electrical installation is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations, and it must be carried out by a competent person. We are NAPIT registered, we notify the work and you receive the certification on completion.

Can I control it separately from the house lighting?

Yes. Exterior lighting runs as its own zones with its own scenes and schedules, but on the same system — so it appears in the same app and on the same wall panels rather than needing a separate timer or a different product's app.
