What home automation actually means

Not remote control. Real automation.

Most 'smart home' products give you remote control — you still have to tell the heating to come on, tell the lights to dim, tell the blinds to close. That's just inconvenience moved to your phone.

Loxone runs logic. Lights adjust to natural light levels without you touching anything. Heating turns on when your phone approaches home. Blinds close before the sun overheats the room. The house does what you would have done, before you need to.

One Miniserver controls every electrical system in the house — lighting, audio, heating, blinds, access control, energy management — from one app, free for every household member, with no monthly subscription, ever.

What we install

Seven systems. One Miniserver. No subscriptions.

Most customers start with one or two of these and extend later. Because it's all one platform, adding the next system is programming rather than a second installation.

CCTV

Professionally sited IP camera systems across the East Midlands. Recording stays on your property, footage is actually usable at night, and there is no per-camera cloud subscription.

Why Loxone, not a hub system

Wired is more reliable. One system is simpler. No subscription is cheaper.

  • No cloud dependency

Loxone runs entirely locally. If your broadband drops, every light, speaker, blind and door lock keeps working.

  • No monthly subscription

The Loxone app is free for every member of the household, permanently. No per-device fees, no gateway subscriptions.

  • Wired reliability

Loxone Tree cable carries power and data together. No Wi-Fi dropouts. No interference. No battery-change reminders.

  • One app for everything

Lighting, heating, audio, security, blinds — one Loxone app, not six separate manufacturer apps.

Why a certified installer matters

85% of a Loxone install is software. That's where a Silver Partner earns their keep.

Loxone hardware is excellent, but it's the programming — scene authoring, automation logic, system integration — that makes a home feel genuinely automated. Any electrician can run the cable. Only a certified Loxone partner can commission it properly.

Westgate has four Loxone-trained engineers. Every install is pre-staged at our Mansfield Woodhouse workshop, commissioned on site by a named director, and signed off with a 14-day post-install check. We never sub-contract.

FAQ

Home automation — common questions

What home automation system does Westgate install?
We install Loxone exclusively. Loxone is a wired smart home platform built around a central device called the Miniserver. One device controls everything — there is no separate hub for lights, a different hub for heating, and a third for audio. One system, one app, free for every household member, no subscription.
What makes a good home automation installer?
Three things worth checking before you sign anything. First, whether the engineers are directly employed or sub-contracted — we never sub-contract, so the people who quote are the people who install. Second, whether they're certified by the manufacturer whose system they're selling; we're a Loxone Silver Partner and all four of our engineers are Loxone-trained. Third, whether the quote is fixed in writing. Day-rate installs on a system this complex have a habit of growing.
Do you charge for a quote or a site visit?
No. The site visit is free and carries no obligation, and you get a fixed written quote within 5 working days of it. If we think a full system isn't right for your property or your budget, we'll say so at the visit rather than quote you for something you'll regret.
How much does home automation cost?
Garden room automation starts at £3,995 ex-VAT for the Soft Upgrade tier. Whole-house home automation for a 3–4 bed property typically falls in the £15,000–£25,000 range. New builds and major renovations with full Loxone specified at M&E stage run £18,000–£45,000 ex-VAT. All prices include supply, installation, programming, commissioning and a 14-day post-install check.
Does home automation have a monthly fee?
No. Loxone runs entirely locally from the Miniserver installed in your home. There is no monthly subscription, no cloud dependency, and no data leaves your property unless you enable remote access. The Loxone app is free for every household member, permanently.
What areas do you cover for home automation installation?
We cover NG (Nottingham, Mansfield, Hucknall, Kirkby), DE (Derby, Belper, Ashbourne), S1–S26 (Sheffield, Chesterfield, Worksop) and LN1–LN6 (Lincoln area). All installations are carried out by Westgate's own Loxone-certified engineers — we never sub-contract.
Can home automation be retrofitted into an existing house?
Yes. Loxone's Tree cabling system routes through existing wall voids and ceiling spaces wherever possible. Retrofit is more expensive than new build — typically 30–40% more labour — but most properties can be fully automated without replastering. We carry out a free site visit and return a fixed written quote within 5 working days.
How long does a home automation installation take?
Garden room installations take 2–5 days depending on tier. Whole-house retrofits are typically 1–3 weeks on site. New builds follow your first-fix and second-fix schedule. We pre-stage all hardware at our Mansfield Woodhouse workshop before arriving on site, which reduces install time by approximately 30%.
