01 · Measure first

It is never what people assume it is

Circuit-level monitoring shows what actually consumes the energy. In practice it is usually the immersion, the EV, an old chest freezer in the garage, and standing losses nobody has ever looked at.

Once that is visible the decisions get much easier and a great deal less speculative. You stop guessing which change is worth making.

Spend the generation before it gets sold

Surplus generation goes to the hot water cylinder before it goes to the grid. The EV charges on the cheap overnight window, or on surplus solar during the day if the car is home.

The heat pump runs its hot water cycle when generation peaks rather than at 6pm. On a time-of-use tariff that scheduling is worth real money without anyone changing what they do.

Home Energy Management — common questions

What does a home energy management system actually do?
Three things: it measures consumption circuit by circuit so you can see where energy goes, it moves flexible loads to the cheapest or greenest hours, and it prioritises your own generation over grid import. The measurement alone is useful, but the saving comes from the automation — because it keeps working after everyone has stopped looking at the app.
Is solar divert worth it?
On most tariffs, yes, and it's usually the quickest win on an existing array. Export rates are typically a fraction of import rates, so every kilowatt-hour you use yourself instead of exporting is worth several times more. Diverting surplus into the hot water cylinder is the simplest version and often pays for itself inside two to three years on a well-sized system.
Do I need solar panels for this to be worth doing?
No. Without solar the value comes from monitoring and tariff shifting — moving the EV, the hot water and any other flexible load into cheap overnight windows on a time-of-use tariff. Households with an EV and a time-of-use tariff often see the strongest return of anyone, with or without panels.
Will it work with my EV charger?
Most likely. We integrate with the common OCPP-capable and API-exposed chargers, and with several manufacturer systems directly. Surplus-solar charging depends on the charger supporting variable current, which most modern units do. If your charger is a basic fixed-output unit with no control interface, we'll tell you at survey rather than promising something it can't do.
Can it work with Octopus Agile or Intelligent?
Yes. Time-of-use tariffs are exactly what load shifting is for — the system schedules flexible loads into the cheap periods automatically. Agile's half-hourly pricing gives the most scope for optimisation, though Go and Intelligent are simpler to plan around and, for most households, capture the bulk of the available saving.
How much does it cost to install?
Monitoring with solar divert typically starts around £2,200 ex-VAT. Adding EV integration, battery control and multi-circuit monitoring across a larger property usually lands between £3,500 and £7,000 ex-VAT. We'd rather quote after seeing the consumer unit and the existing kit than give a number that turns out to be wrong.
Does it need an internet connection to save money?
The control logic runs locally, so scheduling, solar divert and monitoring all continue offline. The one thing that needs a connection is fetching live half-hourly tariff pricing on something like Agile — if that's unavailable the system falls back to your configured schedule rather than doing anything unpredictable.
