Almost every smart home problem we are called out to fix is a network problem wearing a costume. The television buffers, the cameras drop out, the speaker in the back bedroom stutters, the app is slow from the garden. None of those are faults in the devices. They are a single consumer router in a hallway cupboard being asked to cover a three-storey house with solid walls.

01 · The fix

Structured cabling, terminated somewhere sensible

Cat6 runs from a central position to every point that benefits from a wired connection — televisions, access points, cameras, the office, the garden room — terminating in a patch panel in a comms cabinet rather than a nest of adapters behind a sideboard.

Anything wired stops competing for airtime, which immediately improves the wireless for everything that genuinely needs to be wireless.

02 · Wi-Fi

Designed from the building, not hoped for

Multiple ceiling-mounted access points, wired back to the cabinet, positioned from the building's actual construction rather than a coverage map that assumes plasterboard.

Solid walls, foil-backed insulation and stone all attenuate signal severely. A survey costs far less than discovering that after the plastering is finished.

03 · Timing

The cheapest thing you will ever do, and the one most people skip

Cat6 at first fix costs very little per point. The same routes retrofitted afterwards can cost several times more and involve lifting floors.

Even if you never use half the points, run them. They are the infrastructure every other system on this site sits on.

FAQ

Home Network & Structured Cabling — common questions

How much does home network cabling cost?
A typical retrofit covering eight to twelve Cat6 points, a comms cabinet, patch panel and two or three ceiling access points starts around £1,600 ex-VAT. In a new build or renovation, where the cable goes in at first fix, the same specification is considerably cheaper because almost all of the cost is labour and access rather than materials.
Isn't Wi-Fi good enough now?
Wi-Fi is excellent for devices that have to move. It is a poor choice for devices that never move — televisions, cameras, access points, a desktop, a games console — because every one of those competes for the same airtime as your phone. Cabling the static devices is what makes the wireless good for everything else.
How many network points should I run in a new build?
More than feels reasonable. The marginal cost of an extra point during first fix is small, and the cost of adding one afterwards is many times higher. As a rough guide: two behind every TV position, one per access point location, two in any office or study, and one to each outbuilding. Unused points cost you almost nothing; missing ones cost a great deal.
Can you get a proper connection to a garden room?
Yes, and it is worth doing properly. A buried armoured or ducted fibre or Cat6 link gives full speed to an outbuilding, where a repeater or powerline adapter typically halves throughput and drops intermittently. If you are having any groundwork done, running a duct at the same time is the cheap moment to do it.
Do I need this if I'm having a Loxone system installed?
The Loxone control cabling is separate and does not depend on your data network — that is why the system keeps working when broadband drops. But anything involving cameras, streaming audio, wall panels or remote access sits on the network, so a sound network makes the whole installation better. We specify both together.
Will you tidy up an existing installation?
Yes, and it is a common request. Re-terminating into a labelled patch panel, fitting a proper cabinet, testing every existing run and producing a documented cable schedule usually takes a day or two and makes every future job on the property faster and cheaper.
Is Cat6 enough, or should I run Cat6a or fibre?
Cat6 handles 1Gb comfortably and 10Gb over shorter domestic runs, which covers essentially every home requirement now and for the foreseeable future. Cat6a and fibre are worth considering for very long runs or if you have a specific reason to expect 10Gb everywhere. We would rather run more Cat6 points than fewer premium ones.
