01 · Zoning

A target and a schedule per room

Bedrooms drop to 16°C overnight and come back up before the alarm. The home office holds 20°C on weekdays and doesn't bother at weekends. The bathroom gets a short boost in the morning rather than being heated all day.

Nothing is heated on the assumption that the hall is representative of the house, because it never is.

Slow systems have to anticipate, not react

Underfloor heating needs to start early enough to hit temperature at the right time, and to use outside temperature to judge how early that is.

Weather compensation on the flow temperature is where most of the efficiency gain sits — especially with a heat pump, where the difference between a good and bad control strategy shows up on every bill.

Smart Heating Controls — common questions

How much can smart heating controls actually save?
Independent studies of zoned heating with presence-based setback generally report 15–25% off heating energy, and our own installs sit broadly in that range. The saving comes almost entirely from not heating unoccupied rooms and from lower flow temperatures via weather compensation. Be sceptical of anyone quoting 40% — that figure usually assumes you were previously heating an empty house continuously.
How is this different from a Nest or Hive thermostat?
A Nest or Hive is still one thermostat controlling the whole house — it's a smarter version of the same single-zone approach. The difference here is per-room control: every room has its own sensor, its own target and its own schedule. That's the change that produces the saving, because most of the waste is heating rooms nobody is in.
Does this work with underfloor heating?
Yes, and underfloor is where it makes the biggest difference. UFH is slow to respond, so it has to start early enough to reach temperature at the right time — and how early depends on the outside temperature. We control the manifold actuators per loop and calculate start times rather than running fixed schedules.
Is it compatible with a heat pump?
Yes, and heat pumps benefit more than boilers do. Heat pump efficiency falls sharply as flow temperature rises, so weather compensation — running the lowest flow temperature that will actually heat the house on a given day — is the single biggest lever on running cost. We integrate with the heat pump's own controls rather than fighting them.
Do I need to replace my radiators?
No, but each zoned radiator needs a controllable valve fitted, which is a straightforward plumbing job. What sometimes does need revisiting is radiator sizing if you're moving to a heat pump and lower flow temperatures — that's a separate conversation and we'll flag it at survey rather than after.
How much does zoned heating control cost?
A typical 3–4 bed retrofit with per-room control starts around £2,900 ex-VAT and commonly lands between £4,000 and £7,000 depending on zone count and whether it's radiators, underfloor or a mix. New builds are cheaper because the wiring goes in at first fix. Fixed written quote after a free site visit.
What happens if the internet goes down?
Nothing changes. All heating logic runs locally on the Miniserver in the property — schedules, setbacks, weather compensation and window detection all continue. This matters more for heating than almost any other system, because a cloud outage in February shouldn't leave a house cold.
