Smart bulbs are where most people start and where most people get stuck. They work, roughly, until someone flicks the wall switch and the bulb loses power — then the app can't reach it, the voice assistant says the light is unavailable, and everyone goes back to using the switch. The bulb was never the problem. Putting the intelligence in the bulb was.

01 · The approach

Intelligence in the consumer unit, not in the bulb

The wall switches stay switches — they just do more. A single press turns the room on at the level it should be, a double press sets a scene, a long press dims.

The bulbs stay dumb, cheap and replaceable, and nothing breaks when somebody uses the wall. That is the whole difference between a system and a shelf of gadgets.

02 · Design

Layers, not brightness

A kitchen needs task light over the worktop, ambient light for the room, and something low and warm for eleven at night. Most houses have one bright ceiling pendant doing all three jobs badly.

We set the layers out at design stage, dim each independently, and group them into scenes — so you press one button rather than four.

03 · Automation

Where it stops being a gadget

Corridors and bathrooms on presence detection at 20% overnight, so nobody hunts for a switch at 3am. Daylight tracking that lifts colour temperature in the morning and warms it after sunset.

Lights that dim themselves when the cinema starts. None of it needs an app open, which is the test of whether automation is actually working.

Smart Lighting Installation — common questions

What's the difference between smart bulbs and a smart lighting system?
Smart bulbs put the electronics inside each lamp, so every bulb is a device that needs power, firmware and a network connection — and flicking the wall switch cuts it off. A lighting control system puts the intelligence at the consumer unit and leaves the bulbs as ordinary dimmable LEDs. The switches keep working, replacement lamps are cheap, and the whole house behaves as one system rather than forty independent gadgets.
Do I need to rewire the whole house?
Not usually, but lighting is the one system where wiring genuinely matters. Retrofitting into an existing house means running control cable to the switch positions, which is normally achievable through existing wall voids and ceiling spaces — most of our retrofits happen without replastering. New builds and renovations are far simpler because we specify it at first fix.
How much does smart lighting installation cost?
A single well-designed room typically starts around £3,200 ex-VAT including dimming, scenes and switches. A whole-house lighting control system for a 3–4 bed property usually falls between £8,000 and £18,000 ex-VAT depending on circuit count and whether colour control is wanted throughout. We price it per circuit after a site visit, fixed in writing.
Will it work with my existing light fittings?
Most of the time, yes — as long as the fittings take dimmable LED lamps or have a dimmable driver. The common exceptions are integrated fittings with non-dimmable drivers, and very cheap GU10s that flicker at low brightness regardless of the dimmer. We check the existing fittings at survey and tell you which ones are worth keeping.
What is circadian or daylight-tracking lighting?
It shifts the colour temperature of the light through the day — cooler and brighter in the morning to match daylight, progressively warmer through the evening. The intent is to stop bright blue-white light in the hours before bed. It runs automatically once set up, and it's one of those features people don't think they want until they've lived with it.
Can I add colour-changing lighting to only some rooms?
Yes, and that's usually the sensible approach. RGBW costs more per circuit than warm-white dimming, and in most houses it earns its place in a handful of spaces — a garden room, a bar, a cinema, a child's bedroom — while the kitchen and living areas are better served by high-quality tunable white.
Does it need an internet connection?
No. All the logic runs locally on the Miniserver in your property, so scenes, dimming, presence detection and daylight tracking carry on working with the broadband unplugged. Remote access from outside the house is optional and something you choose to enable.
