Retrofit — does it actually work?

No new build required. Most properties take Loxone with minimal disruption.

Whole house automation used to mean new build. Loxone Tree changed that. Tree cable is 0.8mm diameter — it routes through existing wall voids, behind skirtings, through floor joists and along picture rails. In most homes, no replastering is needed.

We've retrofitted Loxone into Victorian terraces, 1970s semis, 1990s new-builds and Grade II listed farmhouses. Every project starts with a free site visit where we produce a room-by-room cable-route plan before a quote is written.

Retrofit does cost more than new-build — typically 30–40% more labour — but the result is identical: one Miniserver, one app, everything running automatically with no monthly subscription.

FAQ

Whole house automation — common questions

Can whole house automation be retrofitted into an existing property?
Yes. Loxone's Tree cabling system routes through existing wall voids and ceiling spaces wherever practical. Most 3–4 bed properties can be fully automated without replastering. We carry out a free site visit to assess each property individually and return a fixed written quote within 5 working days.
How much does whole house automation cost?
A 3–4 bed retrofit typically costs £15,000–£25,000 ex-VAT, covering supply, installation, programming and commissioning. Larger or older properties with difficult cable routes cost more. Our fixed written quotes are fully itemised — hardware, labour and programming are all included with no surprises.
How long does a whole house automation installation take?
Retrofit installs are typically 1–3 weeks on site, depending on property size and scope. We pre-stage all hardware at our Mansfield Woodhouse workshop before arriving, which cuts on-site time by approximately 30%. We work around your decorator or other trades.
Does whole house automation require a monthly subscription?
No. Loxone runs entirely locally from the Miniserver installed in your home. There is no monthly fee, no cloud dependency, and no data leaves your property unless you enable remote access. The Loxone app is free for every household member, permanently.
What rooms and systems can be automated in a whole house retrofit?
Every room and every controllable electrical system: lighting (dimmable, RGBW, scene-based), heating zones, multiroom audio, motorised blinds and curtains, keyless access control, security cameras and alarms, EV charging, solar and battery coordination, and garden lighting. The same Miniserver manages all of it.
Do I need to be in for the whole installation?
Not for the majority of the work. Most customers are present at the initial commissioning walkthrough and the final handover, and available by phone during the install. We schedule install weeks around your commitments and co-ordinate directly with any other trades on site.
What warranty do you provide on a whole house Loxone installation?
12 months parts and labour from sign-off, plus the 24-month Loxone manufacturer warranty on all hardware. An optional annual Care plan from £180/year covers Year 2 onwards with priority call-out and remote diagnostics.
Is whole house automation worth it for a period property?
Yes — many of our installs are in Victorian and Edwardian properties. Loxone Tree cable is 0.8mm diameter and routes through picture rails, behind skirtings and through floor joists with minimal disruption. We've completed retrofits in Grade II listed buildings and always produce a cable-route plan before starting.
